Design System

The Belgian Federal public service of Justice operates on the crossroads of the three main branches of power: the judicial, the legislative and the executive. And when creating or enforcing the law handling your company internal administration can be a tedious task.

Projects like these almost always have the same three challenges:

1 - Manage the stakeholders
In most cases, a lot of people are involved in a project like this: IT, Project Managers, Content Creators and Content Consumers. Usually that last group is represented by one or more people from each internal division, all there to safeguard the content and protocols relevant to them, as they all should!

2 - Get to know the content and content creation process
Getting a good overview of the available content, the content quality, performance and how content is created and curated.

3 - Find the right information architecture.
Bringing it all together and organise it in such a way so that everyone involved can find what they're looking for without having to use the search functionality every single time.

Step 1: Story Mapping

As always we start with the user experience. First step is to identify the different user roles, next step is to map out the tasks they need to be able to complete. Grouping similar tasks into clusters often leads to a first logical step in creating the new information architecture.

Step 2: Taxonomy testing

Once a new information architecture or information model is defined, it's good to test it by letting the future users find a specific item in a tree, or by giving them items and asking them to put it in the provided structure.

Step 3: Audit the content

When the model is validated, the content can be revisited and audited within the context of the new information architecture.

Step 4: Design the experience

Once we have the structure, and a better view of the content and content types, we can create the design system and work out the component library and page templates with a extensive focus on usability which is always key for platforms like this.
